A fever, worsening cough or painful infection can sometimes be managed through primary care. At other times, rapidly changing symptoms, dehydration, breathing difficulty or severe weakness require emergency evaluation. Temperature alone does not determine severity; age, symptoms, history, duration and overall appearance all matter.

Our physicians can assess the whole patient, investigate possible complications and begin appropriate treatment during the visit. Walk in at any hour, including nights, weekends and holidays. No appointment is required.

Evaluation of pain, pressure, congestion, sore throat, fever and related symptoms.

Symptoms and evaluation

Ear pain may come from infection, fluid, irritation, pressure changes or referred pain. Sinus pressure and sore throat are often viral, but bacterial infection or another condition may be responsible.

Seek prompt care for severe pain, swelling behind the ear, drainage, sudden hearing loss, difficulty breathing or swallowing, drooling, severe neck swelling, dehydration or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Examination and clinically appropriate strep or other testing can help guide care. Not every earache, sinus symptom or sore throat requires an antibiotic.

Emergency assessment of redness, discharge, discomfort, injury or possible foreign material.

When eye symptoms need urgent care

Urgent assessment is important for severe eye pain, vision loss, marked light sensitivity, chemical exposure, significant injury, swelling around the eye or pain with eye movement.

NorthStar can evaluate the emergency and determine whether medication, irrigation, imaging or specialist follow-up is needed.

Care for warmth, redness, tenderness, swelling, drainage or a worsening wound.

Skin, foot and ankle concerns

Seek prompt care when redness spreads, pain is severe, red streaks appear, fever develops, tissue becomes dark or numb, a wound produces pus or weakness and confusion occur. Foot and ankle infections deserve particular attention with diabetes, poor circulation or reduced sensation.

Testing and warning signs

Symptoms can resemble flu, COVID-19 or another respiratory illness. Evaluation may include oxygen measurement, physical examination, chest X-ray and laboratory or viral testing when medically appropriate.

Seek emergency care for breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, blue or gray coloring, low oxygen readings, severe weakness or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Influenza and COVID-19 are different viruses with overlapping symptoms. Risk varies by age, pregnancy, immune status and chronic health conditions.

NorthStar confirms influenza and COVID-19 testing. A physician may also consider strep, RSV, chest X-ray or blood work according to symptoms.

Timing, test type, exposure history and condition affect interpretation. Rapid, PCR, combined-test and guaranteed-turnaround claims are not made.

When aches need prompt care

Severe muscle pain, inability to walk, dark urine, dehydration, confusion or breathing difficulty requires prompt evaluation.

HEAD

Headaches

Evaluation of headaches associated with fever, illness, sinus symptoms or dehydration.

Headache danger signs

Call 911 or seek immediate care for a sudden extremely severe headache; weakness, numbness, speech or vision changes; confusion, seizure or unconsciousness; fever with stiff neck or rash; a new severe headache during or soon after pregnancy; or rapidly worsening pain.

Evaluation may include a neurological examination, laboratory testing, CT or other care based on risk factors.

Acute care scope: NorthStar evaluates severe or sudden pain and emergency causes. It is not described as a chronic pain-management clinic or dedicated addiction-treatment program. Call 911 for slowed or stopped breathing, unresponsiveness or suspected opioid overdose.

Urinary Tract & Kidney Infection Care

Urinary symptoms may also come from kidney stones, sexually transmitted infections, vaginal conditions, prostate concerns or other causes. Evaluation helps guide the correct treatment.

Seek prompt care, particularly during pregnancy or with diabetes, kidney disease, urinary blockage or immune suppression. Severe pain, repeated vomiting, dehydration, confusion, fainting, inability to urinate or rapidly worsening symptoms need emergency evaluation.

Antibiotics are used when a bacterial UTI is diagnosed or strongly suspected; they are not automatically appropriate for every urinary symptom.

When should I go to the ER for a fever?

Seek emergency care when fever occurs with breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, seizure, stiff neck, severe headache, dehydration, rapidly worsening symptoms or serious underlying health risks. Any fever in a baby younger than 12 weeks needs prompt medical attention.

Does NorthStar test for flu and COVID-19?

NorthStar provides on-site influenza and COVID-19 testing when clinically appropriate. Confirm the exact test type and expected timing with the facility; this page does not promise PCR, rapid or guaranteed-turnaround testing.

Can flu be treated in an emergency room?

Yes. NorthStar can evaluate severe flu symptoms, treat dehydration and other symptoms, assess for complications and determine whether antiviral medication is appropriate.

Do you provide COVID-19 or flu vaccines?

Routine vaccination is not confirmed on NorthStar's current website. Contact the facility for current information before relying on vaccine availability.

Can NorthStar treat an ear, sinus, throat or skin infection?

NorthStar can evaluate acute symptoms and provide medically appropriate testing and treatment. Some conditions may require specialist follow-up.

Do you treat tooth infections?

NorthStar can evaluate serious medical complications of dental infection, but definitive treatment usually requires a dentist or oral surgeon. Facial or neck swelling, fever, trouble swallowing or breathing problems require urgent attention.

Can I receive same-day UTI treatment?

NorthStar accepts walk-ins around the clock and provides on-site urinalysis. Treatment is based on the examination and test findings; antibiotics are not automatically appropriate for every urinary symptom.

Should I go to urgent care or the ER for a kidney infection?

Emergency evaluation is appropriate for high fever, severe back or side pain, repeated vomiting, dehydration, confusion, pregnancy with significant symptoms, immune suppression or rapidly worsening illness.

Do you provide chronic pain or fentanyl-use treatment?
